The Colts Neck
The Colts Neck General Store was built in 1849 by Benjamin Matthews. His wife Rhoda helped him run the store which was originally built as a lumber mill. The couple resided in the white house to the left of the General Store which was recently renovated but is still standing today. For anyone that is familiar or visiting the area- Source Brewing around the corner is a local brewery located in a beautifully restored barn that was actually built by our famous Matthews family!!!
Over the years the store was a hardware store, sold liquor, butcher shop, deer tagging and of course became and actual General Store selling any and everything you needed. It has been a deli for at least the past 30 years though. Surprisingly the store hasn't had as many owners as you'd probably think. Each has lasted on average 15 years, adding their touch to this special piece of history.
Fast forward to today, The General Store is standing stronger than ever. We're still operating as a deli serving breakfast and lunch all day long. We have seating for 40+ people inside and now proud to announce we have outdoor front porch seating!!! Backyard patio coming soon!!! Fall in love with the rustic homey decor inside where you'll find antiques all through out the store. Grab a cup of coffee and relax in " The Gathering Place", our living room area with a couch and tv!!! If you're into unique items then check out our local vendors that sell their products here such as custom signs, bottle openers, soaps, candles and more!!! And lets not forget our delicious baked goods- we have a crumb cake that is out of this world and our banana bread is famous!!! Stay tuned for events we have throughout the year whether it be comedy nights, pancakes with Santa or ladies nights.
So how did this awesome place come to be the town hub? We will tell you!!! The owner Mary started working here when she was 18 years old back in 2009. She quickly fell in love with the charm of this old building and more importantly with each and every customer that came in. Over the years she started picking up more hours and every time she tried to leave she ended up back in the store. Mary knew early on that she wanted to own the store, it was a place that meant very dear to her and she needed to have it.
In March of 2017 her dream became a reality. She bought the store and immediately got to work repainting, moving things around and adding general improvements in order to bring her vision of making it a place where people can come together and feel like their in grandmas house come to life. While this was all going on, Mary got engaged in her house above the store to her long time boyfriend Mike that she met while taking his order on weekends when she was 20. October of 2017, they got married in the backyard and had their reception in true Halloween fashion right in the middle of the General Store!!! They currently still live upstairs and you'll be sure to find Mary in the store every day of the week. Be sure to stop in and check out our little treasure of the past. You won't be disappointed. We promise.
